I hate this post as much as I hate criticism. I didn't like it at work and I don't like my art criticized.

That said, both areas of criticism have been and continue to be contributions to my growth and development (and I still hate it)

I've taken your response as a critique. Subsequently, I've spent some time in self-reflection. I've concluded that your hatred of the post means it had an impact. I now interpret your hate as love. My work here is done!!!

Great post Donn. I'm a big fan of critique. Always listen to it and then decide what resonates with me. Of course it is very important to know who it is that delivers critique, so you can value it accordingly. Be open, but above all, you are in control!

Thanks Marcel! Yes, and there might be other value in parallel to the concept of continuous improvement. If an audience is inexperienced, knowing their reactions still might help a person. It would be useful if you'd like to sell or market to that group. Or if you're doing a photo talk for a group, for example. They'll pay more attention to your words if you include some material that they predictably would enjoy.

It's not just cat VIDEOS that people enjoy, I've come to learn :-)

Great topic. In general, I would say criticism is a good thing. I am open for criticism -good or bad- because it helps me to grow and it opens room for discussion. I have received all kinds of feedback regarding my work and I usually thank the people for sharing their opinion. The only thing I have a problem with is when people are disrespectful when sharing their opinion. Even if someone doesn’t like my work, this person can share their opinion with respect.

Thank you Susanne!

100% agree. When that happens, likely something is very wrong in their own life, which has them behave thusly. If they are just trying to be cruel, they've got personal issues.

A truly wonderful post, Donn.

How we choose to deal with criticism is one of the defining traits of how happy and ultimately successful we are.

I subscribe to the Brene Brown admonition: "You can critique me when you earn the right to do so..." or - something close to that. Some folks we listen to BECAUSE they have walked the same path, others - the ones who bring nothing but criticism those who are actually doing something are the fog and white noise of life. Leave 'em alone.
