I had a friend who recently confessed to me that he had absolutely no interest in SFMOMA, or any other museum of modern art.
His words might sound familiar: “I have no idea what the point is,” and, “Anybody could do that.”
He was talking about abstract art. Modern art museums of any size are pretty much guaranteed to have several abstract pieces on display. And it’s not for everybody; certainly not my friend!
That’s ok. Not everybody likes Picasso, or Ansel Adams or any other artist you can name. Same goes with different genres.
Abstract art can be as polarizing as any. I’ve got no judgments about what people like or don’t like. But I’m always curious. So what about you, right now? Here’s a generic question that I’d like you to answer, if you would:
Please click one of the boxes, it’s anonymous. We can find out together what people think. My answer will stay out of the poll, but I’ll tell you it would be “Sometimes.”
But let’s talk about me!
I started with the top level question because I’ve dabbled in making abstract images myself. I’ve sprinkled a few abstracts into letters here or there. I haven’t made a project of them.
But I’ve always been curious about abstracts as a genre, and I thought I’d ask you for opinions. I’m often surprised by what different people think about any piece of art, and abstracts are especially unpredictable in that regard.
Will you play along and take a look? Here are nine quite different pieces.
What do you think? If any resonate, which one(s)?
Please let me know in any way that’s comfortable for you. A comment below, a private note, carrier pigeon (super bonus points for that, but please give me instructions on what to do after I’ve got your bird!!!)
It can be as simple as, “I like Plate 4”. Or, “None of them really do anything for me.” Or explain in depth, if you are so inclined.
I would appreciate it!
Thank you again. And have a great week.
Until next time,

So definitely in the "sometimes" column as well (so much for anonymous) but did want to say that for the exception of the first 2 pictures, I really liked all the photos you showcased. The ONLY reason I'm not huge on the first 2 is because I keep imagining them as blur shots.
Keep doing what you're doing!
It wasn’t very clear for me if the plates presented were photos or paintings.I had to read your post twice just to make sure. I know that sounds dumb, but hey, I haven’t had my coffee yet. Clearly pictures, I got it, but maybe it’s a bit unfair to be presented together, as you can’t help but compare them.
1 and 2 seem pretty abstract to me but don’t tell me much, although , sometimes just the colors can do the trick;
3 and 4, I like them both- a reflection of the sky and something else I can’t decipher but again, the color strikes again: I love blue;
5 very nice picture of the grass, I like it but not that abstract for me;
6 clever way of playing with a reflection, I like it. Abstract? not so much;
7 looks like a bad picture that we usually toss in the bin
8. Seems too much common
9. I love the collage or whatever it is. Abstract or not, I don’t care .
Now, back to my coffee.
