I’m not gonna pay the mortgage by doing freelance magazine work like this.
But I do get to meet people that I’d otherwise never meet, and I love that about assignments. If you live in the U.S. you know this person, even though you may not recognize her name. Candace created M.A.D.D., Mothers Against Drunk Driving with no experience or training, armed “only” with her personal determination. And in the process saved many, many lives. The complete article is attached, worth your time imo.
I spent over an hour just chatting with her. The actual photograph didn’t take long, I just needed to set up lights and do a little rearranging of things. It wasn’t a lot of effort in this case, although if you’re making your own images, remember this: The great Arnold Newman is attributed with saying “90% of portrait photography is moving furniture." He wasn’t wrong!
Anyway, she’s a lovely, welcoming person who continues to speak publicly and teach others how to get things done if they’re inspired to make changes in the world. It’s really worth looking at her personal website to realize how impressive she’s been. She founded We Save Lives a decade ago, working to reduce Drunk, Drugged, and Distracted driving. (Put down the cell phone until you pull over, please. Please.)
Despite her enormous accomplishments, she’s just a person like you and me. Still working, yes, but enjoying her pup, knitting, reading, and interacting with the community. She was as interested in my career as I was with hers.
She’s a reminder that we all can make a difference, one way or another. And of how great people can be, just sitting across a coffee table.
Until next time,

Love the comment about moving furniture. I've probably moved 10 households of furniture over the years to get the portrait I wanted - weddings are the events that call for the most furniture moving (try getting a shot of 5 bridesmaids and a bride in a typical living room)
Wonderful piece of inspiration. I agree with you. Sometimes photography is not about the money it is about the places and people this beauty art of photography takes you.
