Making Adjustments: When the Old Way Just Won't Work Any More
A very light piece, as I'm traveling starting this week.
Sometimes adjustments are needed.
Max had cycled for many years, but his back was no longer pleased when he biked for more than an hour at a time. His selection of resting street bikes began to get overly comfortable in the garage. He’d done exercises and stretches aplenty, working as best he could to relieve his back pain, hoping to continue as he always had. But long rides became less and less joyful. And Max has always loved cycling, whether for 20 or 30 miles around his home, or on lengthy, multi-day trips.
An alternative
He wasn’t ready to stop, but he did need to make changes. His back wasn’t a match for his existing equipment. The alternative? Recumbent bikes.
Yes, they look different and they aren’t quite as versatile as upright bikes. Going up hills is substantially more difficult, as you can’t stand up and use your body weight to help push. It’s all legs, so you’d better redefine what it means to be strong if you want to handle elevation in a recumbent.
On the other hand, recumbents are actually faster than upright bicycles on flat ground, and banned in traditional cycling races.
And hills are still possible, you just gotta work harder. The alternative to recumbents would be missing out, and why should he consider that option? I wish I knew who said this, but it’s stuck with me:
“You didn’t come this far only to come this far.” - Unidentified
Max didn’t, either.
Sometimes in life, things simply have to change. Then it’s time to try a different way, or perhaps a different thing. Either way, when you find things you love doing you’re likely to smile just a little bit more. And we like it when you smile.
Until next time,
P.S.: As stated in the sub-headline, I’m traveling over the next few weeks, so the articles will be brief and my responses to comments likely to be delayed. Thanks for understanding!
