Besides being part of the story, what else do they have in common?
A clue has already been provided… come on, now….
The answer is: Shoots and Ladders.
Ugh. If this reference is confusing to you, you might consider yourself lucky. If you’re old enough to recognize it, I probably owe you an apology.
Anyway.
Why use a ladder to photograph something?. Well, in last week’s story I talked about Max and his recumbent bike. When I was making images to complete the story I wanted to give a few different perspectives on his experience as an enthusiast, within the confines of the street outside his house. But showing speed with a bike is a tricky thing to do, if it’s on a street. With dirt bikes you can have dirt flying around, but this isn’t that.
Motion blur can help.
Shooting from above not only allowed the pavement to assist me in showing speed, but it provided some variety to the full set of shots we were creating. Shooting early in the morning also allowed me to use shadows to our advantage.
Those shots were the first utilizations of a ladder; next there’s Dreaming Max. I’d tried this concept on the pavement first, and got an idea of what was possible, then moved to this bed to complete it. Window light was nicer than the strobes I’d bounced off the ceiling, so I went with that.
So there you go. Fun with ladders, indoors and out.
Until next time,
P.S. As stated last week, I’m traveling and so if you have comments, please be patient, I’ll get to them eventually.
